One of my best tricks is finding a left over cache of .458 DG ammo just before beginning to load replacements.
In this case it was 15 rounds of .45-90 ammo - enough to kill several bison, water buff, or Cape buff.

Son and I shot pistol range before rifle range on New Years day and my old S&W M39 with wood grips got a lot of attention. The onlookers must have been born after the 39 was replaced. My wife has their .380 and it is slick, accurate, and best of all , easy to operate the slide. The ranch wildlife manager estimated this red deer cow/hind to weigh 300 pounds; almost as big as a cow elk. We have had many excellent meals from this beauty and still have a good deal of smoked sausage left. :)

If what you say is true, than my old age began years ago when I shot a rattler under a deer feeder with my 4 inch 44 mag using full house 240 grain ammo. No ear protection because I was working, not hunting. But that snake was speeding toward the creek bed with his head up in the air and I could not...

Thanks for the pix; that is a nice looking rifle! I shoot 1886 actions in 45-70 and 45-90, but am not a gunsmith, BUT, Gunny Mack made a suggestion that makes a lot of sense to me. Keep it simple and cheap and make it a success or an inexpensive and valuable learning experience. With all the 1886 an...

Re: Rebarreling a rossi 92 to 38 special.

My m92 .357 Mag rifle is a conversion and was not made to shoot 38 Special. The only factory 38 that would stabilize was the hot 110 and 125 loads . Anything heavier was too slow to stabilize and some even hit the target sideways. This was due to the twist in the Douglas custom 20 inch barrel. The D...

Pitchy,
Liking your Marlin Cowboy rifle.
I almost bought one before I discovered it did not come in 45-90.
So I bought my 1886 45-90 TD with 26 inch barrel. It is heavier, but that helps dampen the recoil.

How could such a big heavy guy complain/whine like that? Well, he did admit that he is not a hunter, which likely means that he does not regularly shoot clays with a 12 gauge. Also, he was not shooting a heavy rifle, there fore allowing more recoil energy to reach him. This 9.5 pound Miroku/Winchest...

Doc,
Please report on the accuracy you get as I am curious as to what my 1895 .405 gets.

Since I do not target shoot and everything I shoot at dies, I can only assume that he accuracy is average for a Miroku/Winchester 1895 .405 (whatever that is) and just go on killing game with mine. :)

Yes, some farmers and ranchers seem to value their grass more than the Pronghorn. Some also make money from selling their tags to hunters and outfitters.

The mild meat really takes to the seasoning and makes great chili. I use Wick Fowlers mix, but my daughter volunteered to do the cooking honors, so she will make her own seasoning.
