I'm not sure but I believe a good chrome job is layered over a copper base coating. Forge welding won't work through copper. It would all have to be removed. One piece of advice when shooting golf balls from a cannon. Golf balls don't penetrate like a metal projectile. They bounce. If you shoot at a tree, the ball will be coming back with near the same velocity as when it left. I will never do this again, trust me.

If you want a boom but no projectile, use some old bread or buns. It compacts nicely to give the powder something to push against, thus increasing the boom. It won't smolder to start a fire like rags or paper, it's 100% biodegradable and the critters eat it when your done. Win, win, win. :D

Re: The 50 to 100 Yard 2" Difference...

You sort of answered your own question. The line of sight and line of bore are the components. The bullet, line of bore, has to rise 2"to be zeroed at 50 yards. The bullet continues to rise until top of arc, thus being 2" high at 100. To do as you suggest would be the correct step to have ...

The height of the scope indicates that the bullet is rising to cross the line of sight at 50 and be 2" high at 100.

It seams that the 38WCF, my favorite, is not allowed. It has a bottle neck. That makes it too scary for them. Otherwise my 1892 would already be the gun. Here's the skinny. It looks like my dear Ohio is ever so slightly pulling it's head out of there by allowing the strait wall cartridge that is allowed in hand guns to be used in rifles for deer for the 2015. Was the cap detonated on the unintended cylinder? I'm thinking if the cap was fired, then it could be as stated, that something is hitting the cap. If not, then the fire came through the front, around the ball. If the chambers are next to each other, inspect the chamber walls.
