I think Paul nailed it with the suggestion of the artillery hold. In my experience with a springer the hold is everything. God only knows if the actual details of that story are true, but I do know she has never offered an apology for offering propaganda pictures to an enemy our country was fighting at the time. I know a lot of Vets that still think she should be shot.

I've shot many a nickle plated .38 Spec till the nickle wore thru to the brass with no problems. I'd say the biggest factor is hot hot the round is. I never practiced with hot ammo.

I can rember driving a Ford F-100 that didn't have factory a/c. what it did have was an excellent vent system with vents in the floor you could open up and get a free flow of fresh air. It seems that when Ford when with A/C they stopped putting the floor vents in. It was a bad day at black rock.

Fortunately I have a local gun store that is owned and operated by veterans and the major owner is a retired machinist and gunsmith. I will never protest prices with them I will pay what they ask and never complain just to make sure they stay in business.

After reading about the trip that Brian Pierce made to Africa several years ago using Garret Hamerheads in a Marlin .45-70 I would be reluctant to rechamber to anything short of a .45-120 considering what a great round the .45-70 is.

I'm not sure how you would do a search on it but there have quite a few pictures of moose and elk on this site that have been killed with the .30-30. The .30-30 is a fine cartridge within it's limitations.

OS, I have a Remington that someone put in a sporter stock and a Smith Corona that is as issued. They both shoot better than I can. My dad used an 03A3 to qualify in the WV National Guard before he was drafted in WWII. He always said the 03A3 was a better rifle than the M1.

If it's not a scope designed for air rifles even an expensive Leopold will fail in a short time. Springer air rifles put any scope to the test because of the rapid recoil acceleration and deceleration involved. It's a short but hard recoil cycle that does them in.
