Kirk,
That's a lovely old rifle in a great cartridge. As my buddy Sixgun says, the sands are trickling through the hour glass. Let's have a range report.

All my rifles get tang sights; the open sights are in-a-drawer dust collectors. I'm sure you're right about needing a lace-on comb if you mount a scope on the rifle.

They are great-looking rifles. I was seriously considering one in .32-20. One thing that gives me pause, though, is that the stock has a lot more drop than I like. I guess I need to handle one. Thanks.

I make lubes for both BP and smokeless. The smokeless is just beeswax, Marvel Mystery Oil, and anhydrous lanolin. The BP lube consists of beeswax, anhydrous lanolin, palm oil, and Mobile One synthetic motor oil. Both work very well. Making lube is a messy business, but I don't do it often. And you p...

Unlike Rusty, I still have my ancient (1972) Grumman 17 foot whitewater canoe. With shoe keel and extra ribs it weighs 81 lb. It takes the heavies quite well in Class I and II whitewater, but unfortunately it hasn't seen the water in a long time. I store it where I see it every day so I occasionally...

High summer is the best time to see Yellowstone, especially for a first visit. Rube, Take a look at the Marbles tang sight that has a short base and two screw holes behind the staff. They use the tang screw and a second, smaller screw. Just leave the smaller screw out. With a standard, longer base sans front screw you can put too much leverage on the sight should you have some...

Just one more small bit of information on the .38-55: Winchester records show that my rifle went through the polishing room on July 18, 1918. Madis had the date of manufacture more than two years later.

I started loading the .38-55 with a set of RCBS dies, and I was satisfied with them. Then I began shooting NRA lever action silhouettes and wanted to get more accuracy from my reloads. I believe the sight comes with a base that fits a standard dovetail. And the sight is then detachable from its base. I don't think the bases are available separately.
