Re: Cops need to go back to revolvers

OK my 2 cents. I would much rather have one good solid hit than 15 really fast misses. One of the stages when I did my qualifying for the Maricopa county SO. was to shoot (on target) 12 rounds in 25 seconds from a revolver loading loose rounds. Not many semi-autos being carried then (ya I'm old). My...

Re: Cast Lead bullet question?

Well, you;ve been given some good info, I'll only reinforce the fact that "fit" is king in cast. Alloy comes in second place in my opinion, as I have run cast (proper alloy of course) to 2100fps +. There is no one step answer for your problem, slug your barrel, check your alloy, and enjoy ...

23 to 25 gr of 2400 will put you in the "trapdoor" range and 24gr. gives me 1385 fps out of the 26" bbl which will stop most anything that needs stopped.

Well sir, Terry probably gave you the best answer, but you know (sounds like yer somewhat familar with the 30-30) that there are lots of loads available for the old 30-30. The answer to the longer range is "get sneaky". I've made 20 yd shots with a 45-70 because I could, never apollogised ...

I killed my first elk with a 22 Rem. single shot, ($16.00) killed the last one with a Ford F250 ($46,000), pick somthing in between those two that you are comfortable shooting, learn to hunt ( get close enough for a good shot), put the shot where it counts and enjoy your meat.

My standard plinking load is 23 gr of 2400, but for what you're looking for I'd suggest 7/9 gr. of Unique ( with a 250gr. lead bullet) or try some of the Red Dot loads. ( I dont ues them but there is ample info available)

Slug your barrel and see what fits. As said before, a good fitting bullet (boolit) will reach those velocities with a softer alloy, and give better expansion.

Ok I'll chime in here. I've killed elk with a 22 and had yotes run off after being hit with a 375H&H.

The best gun or load is the one that you can shoot and gets the job done.

Chivo, for a lighter load 30-30 I like 15 to 18 gr. of 4198 under a cast boolit. Try it you'll like it

Tutt, the best bullets are what works in your gun.
For me it's cast, (with all the hair pulling necessary to find the right formula) with cast you can tailor, weight, hardness, nose type, etc.

I simply take a piece of 40S&W brass, run it in a 44 die to expand the neck, and stick it on the spring. Use the plastic follower to determine how far to expand for starting point.

If it were a 15min. jump and run.......probably a 357 SA, a 336 30-30 an some stuff you don't want to know about. 8)
