I really like the Stevens Favorite pattern single-shot .22's, and IMO the Varner is at the top of the food chain.

A few years ago, I was fortunate enough to obtain a NIB commemorative Stevens Model 71 Favorite for one of my younger Grandson's birthday.

. They're excellent rifles, but you need to be aware that most gunsmiths (and others) find it difficult to do any effective work on their (sometimes) abominable triggers. While most would want to "try before you buy", they're good enough to grab any specimen that can be had for an acceptable price .
