What is/was the most accurate leveraction ever made?

Figured this one might stir a little bit of controversy. Still, it is a serious question. One hears ad nauseum about how accurate the bolt-action can be. Same for the single-shot. Even the semi-action, with the proper tuning and ammunition, is capable of incredible accuracy. But most people dis the good ol' leveraction - you know, the gun that has taken more deer on this continent than any other type of firearm. So, what specific make and model, with what ammunition, do you think is the all-time (to date) most accurate lever-action ever?

Probably a Ruger #1 chambered in a .250 cal with a heavy barrel.

Or if you are refering to a more traditional levergun with a rear lock up bolt, I'd say them .25-35's were supposed to be pretty darn accurate.

A rifle variant marlin 1893 or winchester 1894 in 38-55 is a very accurate weapon, it would probly get my nod. As for the rifle with the most deer to its name it would be a winchester 94 30-30.

Ysabel, yeah, you like to stir the pot! Its going to depend on caliber as some are more accurate than others. I think any rifle in 308, including the Win 88's and Savage 99's, will probably qualify. However, I would have to add that the Browning BLR in 308, 358, and maybe even other calibers will have to qualify even more so! No, its not a traditional lever, but they are so well made, and shoot so well, that they cannot be ignored.

All of the BLR's I've been around will run right with bolt guns accuracy wise,mostly due to the rotating bolt lock up just like a bolt gun.
That said a winchester 94 or one of the variations of Marlins 336 fitted with a scope will shoot very tight groups.
My 95 winchester in 405 is scary accurate when fed its favorite loads as well.

Savage 99's and winchester 88's are shonuff hunting accurate, but I've not been around one that'll shoot clover leafs at 100yds and beyond.

I'd say it's the shooter that determines how accurate the rifle is -- not the rifle standing alone.

Here's an idea of what one of my Winchester Model 94 .30-30 Carbines is capable of doing as long as I do my part.

Can I shoot that rifle like that everytime I go shooting? Hell no but I can come very close.

I have several bolt-action and pump action rifles that I've never shot a group with that is as small or smaller than the one shown shot with the Model 94.

There are lots of accurate rifles out there. They're just waiting for someone to come along who can shoot them.

If you've got a rifle that you can consitently hit a circle the size of an 8" pie plate at 100 yards or a 10" pie plate at 200 yards, you've got a rifle to hunt with.

Ihaven't read all the responses, so I might be repeating someone else. IMO the most accurate lever-gun is the Browning BLR, aka Model 81.

My .358 Win BLR is the most accurate rifle I've ever owned and one of the most accurate I've ever shot. When I holder it right, it will make one hole groups at 100 yards, and not a lot larger at 200 yards.

But again for consistant performance, I'd go with a Sako.

Every company that makes guns has a few great shooters, and a few dogs, most are somewhere in the middle. Sako is the only company that air guages each barrel and has a 1 MOA accuracy claim. So if you get a real dog Sako you're at least going to get 1 MOA, and one would guess that the average is sub MOA.

I have a Model 64 in 25-35 that is the most accurate rifle I've ever shot. Better than any bolt *I've* owned. 5 five shot groups one day, the largest being 3/4" and the smallest 2 were 1/2". That is with 1960's factory W-W 117gr ammuntion. I've not yet found any handloads that will break 1" in it though.....

NIB, OEM, Factory Ammo, Ransom Rest. Range by cartridge Ballistic MPBR

Well Old Savge I did note the date but figured that even back in "92" there was probably some kid that thought you were an old fanny burp. Anyway, I'd bet you could shoot that again or come very close even today.

Yep, a buddy of mine has a BLR and he shoots it pretty darn good. Don't have a clue about the FinnWolfs.

In my experience the BLR is probably tops as far as accurate goes. I have owned 1 in .270 and now own one in .308. They are not quite the equivalent of the best bolts I have ever shot but they are real close! Nice shooting rifles, both capable of 1 MOA if you do your part!

I have owned most of the Winchester models, most of the Marlins, and a couple of Savage 99s, and I have owned 4 of the Browning 81 older steelframed BLR's.

I have found exceptionally accurate guns, and a few lemmons in all of them. But over all, my vote goes for the BLR's. If they have a drawback it's the trigger, but it can be made a lot better by a good gunsmith.

In .22 rimfire, my vote goes to the Marlin 39A, but I also have a Win 9422mag that is very accurate, and a darned good shooting Browning BL22. I like all three for different reasons.

Ya'll are giving mighty short shrift to the Marlins. My new model 444 with less than a 100 rounds through it will shoot one hole 3 shot groups at a hundred yards with a hand load.

Seems like leverguns are a lot like fine cameras. The capabilities designed in far exceed the average users ability or persistance. lol

Here is a sight in for a 99 Savage in 250 built in the year of KirkD's birth. First shot is under the 8 - sight change - next shot it under the 10 - sight change - then five I believe. The 300 99 of the same year is as accurate.

Some good comments and answers here. I have two comments. The most accurate lever rifle I have seen is usually the one used by the guy who beat me out a match. Another side, but not straight stock was a Marlin reworked to test the then new Microgroove rifling. I cannot remember who did it, but a one and a quarter inch diameter barrel with the new Microgroove rifling and chambered in the 30-30 cartridge. Mounted into a 336 action, machine rested and could shoot ten shots into one hole at 100 yards. Of course it was a single shot and rifling only lasted a limited number of shots, one reason the bench rest people gave up on Microgroove. ATB
