New Member with a Winchester 38-55

Post by Retro Guy »

Hello all. I've recently been bitten by the lever gun bug and I just purchased a NIB Winchester 94 Legacy in 38-55 w/octogon barrel and tang sight for $1080.00 out the door, (hopefully, this wasn' too much).

In order to keep costs down I intend to cast for this caliber. I'm an experienced bullet caster for handgun but reloading and casting for this caliber has raised some questions. I've done some searching and I'm a bit confused as to what length brass to use. Also, I've read where bore diameters can very quite a bit. I'm thinking of using a Lyman #375248 cast with #2 alloy sized to .377. Am I on the right track? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much.

Welcome Retroguy...

Get the Starline 2.125" brass, slug your bore (you know that), size your bullets accordingly and I think you'll have a heck of a good time with that rifle.

My current .38-55 is a Contender carbine, but they are all good.
Sincerely,

Hobie

Welcome!!!
Enjoy that rifle.
That which does not kill me has made a grave tactical error.

Yes, Hobie is correct. Welcome and congrats on that new rifle. I would say the price you paid was quite fair but who cares as long as you like that rifle. Regards. 1886.

Glad to have you here.

The newer Wins should slug at .375 and they were usually generous with long throats.

Good Luck!

+1. I've got a Legendary Frontiersman that I haven't thrown a single round down (settle down everyone, someday I'll get around to it). I'm interested in what you end up with so I'll have a starting point.

I've got a Marlin 1893 in .38-55 made about 1914 I think. Anyway, I really wanted the rifle, didn't choose the caliber. Didn't take me long at all to become a .38-55 fan!!! You got your self a good one!!!
