Win. 70 Featherweight--257 Roberts
This is one of the guns that sits in the safe most the time, i bought it new in the early 80`s and it was still made by Winchester.
Thought i`d show it to you guys and shoot a few rounds through it.
This gun will shoot better than i can hold it but after five rounds the barrel will heat up and the groups will open up.
These are the first four shots, i shot four more at another target and the group opened to a couple inches.
Don`t recon there is much one can do about that, after four five rounds you can`t even touch the barrel it gets that hot.
Nice gun, discontinued in this cal.
I did shoot a deer with it years ago and a crow at 250 yards, he went poof.

Your rifle exudes class, Pitchy
is it possible that for a true hunting rifle -- it was never really meant to group too well for 5 shots --- but keeping the first 2-3 together is of paramount importance? (first shot from a cold barrel, plus a follow up shot or two )

Re: Win. 70 Featherweight--257 Roberts
I must just have bad eyes; I couldn't even SEE a target that size with a 3-9x scope at 100 yards. Give me a 20x and I could, barely, and give me a 40x, and I could shoot (and have shot) a similar group with some of the better rifles I've had over the years.
But what I see some of you guys do with scopes under 10x magnification is just amazing.

Re: Win. 70 Featherweight--257 Roberts
Huge fan of the .257 Roberts! I have two, an Arisaka and '95 Mauser that My Grandfather had made up in the 50's.
My Dad has a pre '64 Model 70 that was also Gradpa's in .250-3000, my uncle got the matching rifle in .257R but is was stolen.
Sure would love to have it back!
Nice Shooting!

Sweet rifle. My 257 was built on an old model 54.
Re: Win. 70 Featherweight--257 Roberts
Class, real class.
I wouldn't worry about the groups opening up after 5 rounds. After the first one it's all over anyway right?
She's beautiful rifle Pitchy.

Had one in 250 Savage, iirc, they were limited production and each year for awhile they offered it in a different caliber. Mine was bought for the wife to use.

If you're only going to own one, I think that you made a good choice on both rifle and caliber.Pitchy wrote:Thanks guys, it`s the only bolt rifle i own and bought it from a now gone really neat gun shop owner.
Re: Win. 70 Featherweight--257 Roberts
We had a customer come in a couple years ago with a Winchester 70 XTR Featherweight in 257 Roberts and wanted us to sell it !
Only problem was he'd let it sit in a basement some where for a couple years and it had some seriouse pitting on the action .
A friend ended up buying it from him for about $200 and we derusted it and reblued it . Of course if you look close you can see the pits . Our friend gave it to his 15 year old (at the time he was 12) .
I took it out and worked up a load with the Nosler 115 BT . Best I was getting outta this rifle was 3 in 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" at 100 yards . Anyway the young man has killed 8 deer with it since he recieved it !

Re: Win. 70 Featherweight--257 Roberts
Great round and rifle. Nothing like a Featherweight, especially charming in the thin red pad XTR and Classic (CRF) era. 7mm-08 and .270 are two others that are super in this gun. I had a Featherweight Classic and regret letting it go in a weak cash flow moment. I've always had a .270 in the brood and currently still do in a budget Win 70 (that's a tack driver btw)...but I want my Featherweight back!
Re: Win. 70 Featherweight--257 Roberts
Thanks for the offer but i don`t need another one, maybe someone else would be interested.Paul Jenkins wrote:Pitchy,

BEEEAUTIFUL rifle. Who cares about 5 shot groups? I don't, if I have to shoot 5 times at a deer, IT'S NOT THE RIFLES FAULT.

Re: Win. 70 Featherweight--257 Roberts
In case anyone is interested, Winchester's website is now showing the Model 70 FWT as being available in 257 Roberts. These new ones have the controlled feed /claw extractor which makes it a real classic.
Re: Win. 70 Featherweight--257 Roberts
I have one of these due in from Bud's any day now. It was there Shot Show special this year. I heard about 650 will be made. I love the 257 Roberts, and can't wait for this one to come in. Also have a Kimber 84M, and Ruger 1-A in 257. Haven't played with the Ruger much, but the Kimber shoots real well with Barnes 100 gr TSX over Reloader-19.kaschi wrote:In case anyone is interested, Winchester's website is now showing the Model 70 FWT as being available in 257 Roberts. Re: Win. 70 Featherweight--257 Roberts
Only Roberts I have at the moment is a Ruger #1B that was made in the early 80's . But it does like the Nosler 115 BT in my hnadloads quite a bit !
Incidently there will be a NIB Model 70 XTR Featherweight in 257 Bob sold at public auction here next friday . If I can make the auction I'll watch this one and relay the final price .
