No Caliber Less Than 100 Years Old
I like to throw this out every couple years or so. Even with all the GeeWizBang magnums and fancy shooters out there, I posit that I could get along just fine with nothing less than a hundred years old (especially since I can count the .45acp and 1911 now ) A nice Winchester pump 12ga, a 7mm Mauser, one 25-20 for small fry, a few SAs in various flavors, a nice Sharps 45-70 and I'm good to go for anything that is currently being hunted. Oh...a nice, new .45 Schofield S&W

You can easilly throw the 30-06 in there now too for a bit of long range pop in a medium caliber

Re: No Caliber Less Than 100 Years Old
Well I for one need to have a couple that are newer than 100 yrs. old. I've been a fan of the old .22-250 since I was old enough to read about it, and since it's roots are as a wildcat in the 30's I can't stick to the 100 year rule. I've also been a fan of the parent cartridge the .250 sav. which isn't 100 yrs. old yet.
Most the others I enjoy are 100 yrs. old, but gotta have a couple exceptions for me!

Re: No Caliber Less Than 100 Years Old
The late Jeff Cooper once opined that we have plenty of viable
calibers. What we need to do is improve the launching systems
and our skills as shootists.
I think I could get along just fine with calibers more than 100
years old.
Everything - 22 Long Rifle!
Pistol - 9mm and 45 ACP.
Revolver - I'd miss my 41 magnum.
- 38 Special.
- 44 Special
- 45 Colt - I'd have to buy a new gun or two.
Rifle - 30 WCF
- 35 Remington
- 30-06
- 7.62 X 54R
- I'd miss the 7.62 X 39, though.
- And maybe I'd miss the 243 Winchester.
Other than that, I could do it with what I've got, and it would
be a good excuse to try some "new" old-time calibers.

Re: No Caliber Less Than 100 Years Old
I hunt mostly with the 30-30, but when I need more push I go with the 30-06. I use the 12ga, 9mm and 38 Special for protection and ccw. All over 100 years.
Re: No Caliber Less Than 100 Years Old
Although my pet caliber is the .444 Marlin (only 'cause my wife bought me the rifle 24 years ago) My favorite rifle round is the 7x57 mauser, and it is suitable for everything. Bell shot 1011 elephants with it, and thought it is not a "stopper" he did it. I don't see anyone in their right mind using it for that anymore (myself included) but it will be in our hands in Africa this May. It will do anthing in North America and I love it. .45 Acp works for me in my pistola, and 22LR fixes all the small stuff perfectly. A 12 Ga double rounds out the bunch, although I enjoy 20 Ga as well.... Just my 2 cents....

Couldn't do it, I'd have to go with 75 years or I'd lose the .348 and the Model 71 (1936).

Most of mine are more than 100 years old, which doesn't make them all that old, from my view point.
The 44 mag has lots of old ancestors, don't know if it could be in the inventory, but 45/70 pretty much covers that ground.
What are the ancestors of .357? Lots of similar calibers going back to front stuffers.
Yeah, old school is cool tools.

I could get by with everything over 100 years old. EXCEPT for optics!!! Today's optics are orders of magnitude better than in the past.
Re: No Caliber Less Than 100 Years Old
Jeez guys, not one for 6.5x55mm? For shame!
But yeah, with the exception of the flat shooting magnums and .22 cal bore burners every thing we needed was DONE 100 years ago.
A .257 Weatherby or .264 Win Mag still calls to me however.

I almost called you out on the 375 Holland & Holland, but i did a quick fact check --- 1912 ! I would have been suitably embarassed to say the least (well, probably not )
i wanted to mention the 300 H&H, but it came about in the 20's or 30's ----- a max load '06 with modern powder and 165's will nip the heels of the 'ol H&H shooting 180's though (of course, if we load the H&H with modern powder and 165's, the gap will widen a bit )

.38 Sp., .44 Special, .30WCF and .45-70 among what I have now. This sounds too easy for a lot of folks what with all the gazillion .38s, .30-30s, '06s and .45ACPs, etc. More interesting if you extend it out (back) another 25 years--or more simply perhaps limted to 19th Century cartridges. I do not have but would get .44-40 and keep my .45-70, the latter shooting Leverlution. Hey, the OP said calibers, not specific (variants of) cartridges!

At least the early version of the 8mm Mauser qualifies
and perhaps the later version too. I dont remember when
the bullets went from .318 to .323
Close to the 30-06 but it shoots bigger bullets better.
I bought and shoot a Mauser only because I had a chance
to buy a thousand cartridges for 12 cents each. I have really
grown to like it and the rifle was pretty cheap as well. It has
good heft and those extra long barrels really help the performance. Almost like cheating.

My 1894 30-40 Krag Rifle could serve me well, if I were restricted to only one Firearm. This Krag is a four digit serial number, 30" barrel.
I found at a local small gunshow this past Saturday, an almost like new Krag 1902 rear sight. This was the last variant of Krag sights developed before the 1903 Springfield 30-06. this sight will replace the original 94-96 sight on the ol'girl. BTW; the 94 sight is NFS, so do not even ask.
