Re: Traditional Leverguns Bison Hunt
Joe, sounds great, and a nice price too. Unfortunately, it's not in the cards for me this Spring, though I would sure love to go on a future hunt. I need to replenish my freezer. Thanks for doing this for the guys on the forum!

Unfortunately, the money for such a venture isn't in the cards this year... This is getting repetitive!!

Re: Traditional Leverguns Bison Hunt
I have always wanted to harvest a nice Bison with traditional rifle such as a sharps or lever gun. I wish I could swing that hunt at this time. Great price.

I am afraid I fall in the catigory of no money this year, but I do have a couple of sons who would like to go in the future, maybe next year if you can put something like to together the three of us could join you.
Thanks for the offer to all of us.
I lived in Ok for a couple of years back in 77-79, I would like to go back.

No money here, but having walked 90 acres.......700 is a LOT of walking.

Re: Traditional Leverguns Bison Hunt
Great timing! Just two weeks before I take the wife to Kauai! I may be able to pull this off.
I will clear this with her, but it sounds good. Quick question or two:
1. Reckon the coats will be shedding by then or still good?
2. Will the bison be skinned and quartered in the field or do they have a truck with a gin pole to get them back to camp?
Looks like it is about time to dust off the .45-90 and check the sights.

Re: Traditional Leverguns Bison Hunt
The bison will probably be picked up by truck and quartered elsewhere. It depends where they fall. The coats will be prime. They shed out the under-layer in mid-late April and loose the top wool in mid-late May.

Re: Traditional Leverguns Bison Hunt
Very good. Marty has been saying that if/when I shoot a bison, I should have the hide tanned and the skull cleaned and mounted on a board and pedestal. We are getting a bit low on the water buffalo, so the time is right to go pop a bison for dinner(s).

Very intersted. Which direction from OKC?
Will call my 2 Nephews this evening, might get them to go. They only live 1/2 hour from OKC.
Now, the problem. What to use? Lever, Sharps clone or DR

Re: Traditional Leverguns Bison Hunt
OK - BIG CHANGE. I can't hold these bison, the phone is ringing off the hook at these prices. Had a group today for elk that ended up shooting Bison too at substantially more than I offered them to the forum for. Have 2 bison left that I want to shoot, a cow and bull. First come, first served and the sooner the better at $1050 either. I apologize for this but the hunting business was down this year and when I have clients standing here with cash and paying full price I can't turn them away. I'm going to add bison to the Summer Leverguns Hunt for the same price, spot and stalk in case you still want in but can't get to OK quickly.
I'll add the elk deal here, traditional style:
Cow elk $650
Mature Bull 5X5 or better, most 6X6 $1800 (the bulls will only have their horns for another 30-40 days so jump on this too).
Now, who can make it - pronto?

Re: Traditional Leverguns Bison Hunt
Summer Bison hunt in the same place? Would be better because of the fickle nature of the weather here in Colorado, the early part of March.

Re: Traditional Leverguns Bison Hunt
86er, I'm interested in coming on a bison or elk hunt with you, but wonder about getting the meat back to Georgia. What is available there for packing and freezing meat for transport? I'm sure you have had this issue with other hunters and know what is available and how others have solved the problem. What does such cost?
Thanks
Thanks
Zack
Re: Traditional Leverguns Bison Hunt
There are 3 ways to get the meat back.
1 - Take a Tuff -Pak with your rifle and clothes as one checked in bag. Pay for two additional checked in coolers (empty on the way - 50 pounds each on the way home). American charges $25 first one $75 second.
2 - Travel with a cooler with your clothes in it. Check in second cooler. Bring a personal cooler or cooler bag. On the way home, check in two coolers with meat (50 pounds each) and carry on 35 pounds. Send your rifle and clothes in advance and I'll send them back to you.
3 - Ship the meat home hard frozen. You can use a styrofoam cooler to save weight, and put it in a cardboard box. These can be 70 pounds each and will cost $131.90 per 70 pound cooler to get back to Georgia before they thaw out.
Bison is running around $2.90 per pound for ground or off-cut. For your prime cuts, which are substantially more, this works out to be a decent price per pound. Elk prime cuts are going for $4.30 per pound, and $3.15 ground or off cut. Again, not a bad deal even considering shipping costs.

Re: Traditional Leverguns Bison Hunt
Why do these things happen when I am nearly broke?
I am refurbishing a home.
I am planning to start wearing some jewelry on June 18th.
The tenant's check just bounced.
