Grandson's Birthday Rifle - Range report update
First the fun, then the facts:
Here is Troupe showing off his 10th birthday present, a new Howa 1500 scoped 7mm-08. It is a starter gun with a 20" barrel and kids stock. It also came with an adult sized stock for use when he finishes growing. He has three boxes of the Remington Reduced Recoil 140 grain ammo and we will take him to the 50 yard indoor range Tuesday to fine tune the scope adjustments, before planning an outing out to RKrodle's for some 100 yard practice. He has helped me load .45-90 ammo, so he asked if we can reload his 7mm-08. Maybe he will get a set of dies for Christmas.
I know that it is not a lever gun, but he chose a bolt action after shooting several types of rifles and shotguns.
First, he shot the Chipmunk .22 single shot and a single shot .410 shotgun. Then a Stevens .22/.410 O/U, then, we let him shoot a BB gun, pellet gun, and air pistol. He has also shot his mom's 20 ga SxS, his grandmother's .243, his uncles .223 and .308, my .357 lever action rifle and my Ruger M44 carbine, and my old Parker 20 SxS cut down to fit him. He really likes to shoot my M9422 WRM .22 lever action, so he will eventually shoot lever guns too. He likes them all, but wanted his first deer rifle to be a scoped bolt gun - naturally, none of our family scoped bolt rifles would work for him, so I had to go shopping!
Oh yes, he likes it a lot; and it handles like a carbine! It should be loads of fun to shoot.

The Howa is a good gun and it will last him a lifetime if he looks after it. Pleased to see you have introduced him to the sport.

Troupe's a lucky guy, I could only dream of such presents when I was ten. Still dreamin' now.

Re: Grandson's Birthday Rifle
Good looking boy. Nothing wrong with a bolt gun, sounds like he means to make his first shot count.

Yep. I owned lots of other kinds of guns before I ever got into leverguns seriously. Now they are my favorites overall.Lawyer Daggit wrote:The Howa is a good gun and it will last him a lifetime if he looks after it. Pleased to see you have introduced him to the sport.

Re: Grandson's Birthday Rifle
It sounds to me that he got a great rifle for his needs. When he gets older, maybe he can get a levergun. Thirteenth or Fourteenth birthday might be about right.

GOOD JOB GRANDPA!!!!!
BTW, that really is a lever-gun. Didn't you notice that lever sticking out the side of the bolt?

Doc,
Thank you for the reminder that the bolt handle is a lever. Now, I feel a lot better.

Re: Grandson's Birthday Rifle
Blaine and Doc - Howa and Weatherby rifles - per Wikipedia, Howa has made the Mark V (see two excerpted paragraphs below) and presently makes the Vanguard.
Manufacturing of the Mark V remained there until the early 1970s when material and labour costs led Weatherby to move production to Howa in Japan. Some say the machining and finishing of the Howa made Mark Vs was actually better than the Sauer made guns. In 1995 manufacturing of the Mark V was moved back to the United States, where the the Mark V has been built under contract by both Saco Defense and Acrometal/ATEK.
Today, Weatherby still offers only two lines of centerfire rifles: the Mark V and the Vanguard. The Mark V barreled action is manufactured by ATEK in Brainerd, MN while the barrel and action for the Vanguard are still manufactured by Howa in Japan. Final assembly of the Mark V and Vanguard is performed at Weatherby's company headquarters in Paso Robles.

Re: Grandson's Birthday Rifle - Range report update
Range report W/O pics - it is a shooter and so is Troupe! I did the first few shots to get it hitting in the bullseye at 50 yards at the Target Masters indoor range in Garland, TX and turned it over to Troupe.
After nearly 5 minutes of fussing with the rifle rests, he squeezed of his first shot - and it hit exactly where my last one did, cutting the left top of the X in the bulls eye! His next two were also in the bullseye and then his mom and uncle each put one in the bullseye!
Looks like no one can't shoot this little rifle well.
I will make a separate post with some pictures when we get them off the camera.
The full report will also include info on my son and daughter blasting targets from the hip with the green laser on the DPMS Panther.

Really great choice of rifle in my opinion. Well done! Those managed recoil loads from Remington ought to be just the ticket for him as well.

Wonderful rifles and incredible values. Good choice, Gramps. Perfect cartridge, too.

Funny. My nephew has a Weatherby Vanguard .270. The instructions tell you how to adjust the trigger...RSY wrote:Yes.BlaineG wrote:Doesn't Howa make guns for Weatherbee?

I have a Howa 1500 varmint rifle. The instructions tell you to leave the trigger alone and the adjustment screws are bobbed and glued in place.
I don't know if the trigger assemblies are the same and that's the only difference or not. Great rifles.
