So AJMD, why don't you ask the guy who got one why he was so dissatisfied he had to take it straight to the gunsmith without shooting it.

That's something I would never do.

I think the css is a 'special run' stainless .357 carbine version of the Marlin 1894, but my call to Marlin was not answered except to say "we'll call you back when we have more info". Perhaps not a 'regular production' run since not listed on their website.

Remember they did this before with some "Davidson's" editions, so who knows.

The "1894c" simply means the .357 Mag chambering in the 1894. The '1894css' version is stainless, just as the '1894ss' is a .44 Mag in stainless, vs. the 1894c in blued steel (my old one is called a '1894cs' referring to the crossbolt safety, but is a blued steel gun).

If you peruse the Marlinowners site (link as above), you'll see some other discussion of the model and so on.

To me, the little (smaller than the .44 Mag) 1894c is a wonderful .357 Mag gun, and in stainless will be a really nice utility gun for anything smaller than a moose. One of the guns I've been lusting for for awhile.

If you are getting a gun you KNOW you'll want to tune up, I suppose it makes sense to send it to a gunsmith who will do that from the get-go.

Myself, I'd rathter 'get acquainted' with the gun first, and see if it really has any problems that a little home-gunsmithing or wear-and-tear wouldn't solve.

Gotcha.

Like I said, a little slow today.

I wanted one of those little stainless 16" / laminated buggers
Davidson's put out a couple years ago.

Naw, he's calm as a cucumber. Really indifferent. I bet he just puts away the whole thing in the box and doesn't touch it for a year. Might give you a chance to try it before he does!

(That should wind him up pretty good! )

there was a stainless 1894 in Gorst with laminated grey furniture, 16" barrel; also one in .45 Colt, and several other stainless models.

all priced at $900

I left 'em all sitting there, but can't remember why.

I think the "$900" part would have been reason enough, although a 16" .45 Colt Marlin in any finish would be a nice gun.

The 1894css's have been going for around $600-650 when you can find one, which isn't much more than the blued ones (if you can find even a blued one).
