What's wrong with the 405 winchester?

Post by cutter »

I can't find it right now, but I just read a magazine article about heavy caliber hunting rifles. The author was comparing the 405 Win to another big bore cartridge when he stated that,"...and we all know what's wrong with the 405."

I'm assuming he was refering to the 1895 Winchester.
So... what is wrong with the 405?

Nothing is wrong with it that I know of. Heck it was one of TR's favorites and he took lots of game with it.

What is wrong with the .405 Winchester on heavy game is the fact that it is traditionally loaded with 300gr. bullets that are light for the caliber. This applies to really heavy game like elephant, rhino, and cape buffalo. Remember, calibers for heavy African game in the .400 to .416 bore size are usually loaded with 400gr. bullets while the .405 has 300gr. bullets.

That may be what the writer was talking about.

IMHO, all that is wrong is that Winchester/Browning has not made enough of the new ones from Miroku!

Excellent cartridge. Bitmap is correct, in it's original guise it was loaded with light for caliber projectiles that were probably not up to heavy, dangerous game. Bullet technology has come a long way in the last 100yrs though. Loaded properly it is deadly. Love those .405s. 1886.

Whats wrong with it? Whoever wrote that wrote it for the same reason that Elmer Keith said the 30-06 was too light for elk. (old technology vs. modern bullets) Things change, hopefully for the better.------Sixgun

Nothing wrong the the .405 that I'm aware of. Some folks criticize the 300 gr bullet, but with a sectional density of .254 it'll penetrate alot better than folks that spend most of their time spoutin stuff they've read, and not much time actually doing using the thing, realize.
The worst thing about the 405 is the small selection of suitable components.
