In hull defilade, it would be a surprise to the leader vehicle.

I bet it would, but I wouldn't want to be around when they return fire. :D

I'm all about Armor and Main Battle Tanks. But they were certainly NOT on a budget! At approximately 4 gallons of diesel to the mile, they sucked up a lot of fuel. Further, the 30 cal coax MG and 50 cal TC's MG spit out dollars every time you pulled the trigger. Then the main gun ate hundreds of dollars a round and there were 63 of them.

As a crewman in Germany, this was the type of tank I crewed; an M-60 A1 (not mine).

As a Tank Commander in VN, this was our tank; an M48 A3.

As much as I love the Abrams, I've always loved the German tanks of WWII...

I'm within ya there, Jay. Always thought the Tigers were wicked cool, especially as a kid.

There's a great line from a WWII vet in one of Steven Ambrose' books. The Americans had stopped on a road, figuring out which way to go, when a young German boy walked up to the crew and said " Our tanks are better!". The tank commander said to the boy, "Yeah, where are they kid?". Always thought that was a true American kind of response. :D

Steve,
Anyone that ever read a book about armor in combat knows that they aren't fuel efficient. If you don't get the joke, there's nothing I can do for you.

I got it. That's I was commenting on how much fuel they did burn. Everything about them is big, heavy and expensive.

I was not a fan of Donald Rumsfeld ! It was sarcasm ! I just remember that quote because I though it was a horrible point of view for not being prepared!

Yes, the M48 Patton tank was a replacement for the M47 Patton tank. It had the same basic armament; a 30 cal co-axial MG, a M-2 50 cal TC MG and a 90 mm main gun.

The M60 never was officially named like the Patton was as it was considered an improvement on the M48 design. Besides a better fire computer, the main difference in combat power over the M48A3 was it's larger 105 mm main gun. It also had better armor.

Yes, it's a great museum to visit and as a veteran, you get to visit for free. I visited it in June 2021 before it's grand opening. I think the dioramas in it are very good and it's privately owned and has $100 million worth of military equipment so far. If you're in Wyoming to visit Mt Rushmore and Yellowstone it's in Dubois, Wy on highway 26. We stay in the Twin Pines Lodge in Dubois when we take friends to Yellostone and the NMMV is on the way.

Thanks Steve, I thought so. As a kid I remember building a Patton tank model.
