SAA Engraving
Well ... being new to the SAA scene, I've been looking around at what's what on the various "for sale" sites. While I appreciate a tastefully done engraving job, I'm going to have to admit to being new to this particular style.
Engraved SAA on the Guns International site.
Seems like this might have originally been ordered by Sixgun or Old Savage ... you know ... back when they were "fully functional". Though I'd be hard pressed to think either of them would part with something like this.

I would be too worried about messing them up to shoot them. PASS!
I like nice looking firearms which are not too nice to be used. As a working class person, the things I buy are going to get used.

Did you get a close look at that engraving?

Very pretty. Still, I wouldn't use them. So, PASS.

Re: SAA Engraving
MNJ….Leave me out of that liberal trash………they were probably ordered by RBG and displayed as being comparable to the Mona Lisa………………liberal “art” on a masterpiece of conservatism……..I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more worse example of sacrilege……
This is a true “tasteless additive” and thats why the price is low……no engraver of prestige or renown would let such work be commissioned to him….
Unless the factory does the engraving on any gun it’s looked at by a consummate collector/investor as adding nothing to the value of a gun and by a large percentage of collectors it would detract from the value…….in this case, those guns would be scrapped by the majority.
If I showed those Colts over at the Colt Forum, I’d be banned.
Now, you want to know how I really feel?

Re: SAA Engraving
Yeah, when I first looked at them, I thought they were an example of a really high relief engraving ... deeply engraved. Then eventually I actually looked at the "artwork". That's why I didn't paste the pictures on the site. Hopefully, these were done on later Italian made Colts. Even with just the link, I'm having second thoughts. Might be best to just kill this thread.

Naaaa….leave it up….you only posted a link…..give some of our leftist infiltrators time to save the pics for their next wallpaper projects.
It’s a real Colt and that’s what burns me up…..who cares what they do to clones as they are only a 1/2 step away from the melting furnaces.

Re: SAA Engraving
I thought maybe the 3rd gen Colts were actually contracted to Italy and labeled Colt upon import. Or maybe it was the 2nd gen. That's why I come here ... to learn. I'm sure you know.

I love engraved guns, but not this SAA's engraving. If a gun is done in traditional style like the masters did, I love it. Not this stuff though.

Well I’m certainly no prude but go by the adage of there is a time and place. I’d be embarrassed to show those to anyone. The stocks look nice, the rest is too much.

Re: SAA Engraving
MNJ…..if you want to see if a gun originally came from Italy …or wherever…..look for the import stampings. This is particularly true of all Colt BP guns when Colt revamped the BP line…..there’s a lot of stories that people read that’s says that’s not true….it’s true….John Keosayian, who saved Colt from total bankruptcy and was the CEO of Colt was a personal friend of mine and lives about 4 miles from me……
You should have seen his area in his home where the guns he saved right out of the Colt archives vault…..NOT only one or two individual pieces but PALLETS of machine guns,….one of a kind Proto-Types for different agency’s of the government…as short as short as they can be in different calibers……..the one that “the one that got away” was a transitional prototype 1911 between the 1911 and the A1, made in 1924…..then there was the COLT SAA in 44 magnum…..the 100% engraved Colt by master engraver John Adams…..the two digit SP1’s. I did manage to get the only SP 2’s that left the factory in full camo and electroless nickel and the very first 2 Colt 901’s that came off the assembly line…..00101 and 00102….the first 100 numbers were reserved…
Still has the Colt archives tag on it.
How else did a peon like me get these serial numbers and had them delivered to me in the calibers I wanted in TWO weeks……The problem with public boards is that when a blue collar guy, like me shows off this stuff, I’m a “braggart” but when a rich guys shows them off he’s “cool” and is put on a pedestal.
How about a green Colt AR? Lordy, if I had the major bucks I’d be a millionaire 50 times over. Even my AR’s are registered as pistols but they have 10” Colt government model machine gun uppers on them.
But, John retired and now I’m just a meaningless nobody like Blxxxx.
Oh…then there was the Colt 1911 DOUBLE ACTION prototype sent to John Jovino….but I bought a Jeep with that.

Oh, maybe I'm confusing the SAA's with the recent generation BP guns. Those are some incredible firearms you have there. I'm not sure what they're doing in Pennsylvania though when they'd be so much more comfortable in Florida.

Not something that I would want. But most folks carry their guns concealed these days and I reckon nobody would notice that engraving unless you showed it to them.

Looks like a revolver a pimp would carry and be proud to show off.
The most important aspect of this signature line is that you don't realize it doesn't say anything significant until you are just about done reading it & then it is too late to stop reading it....

Re: SAA Engraving
Here's a succinct story behind the BP replicas from Colt from the 2nd Series and the 3rd series, and the iterations thereof the "C", "D" & "F" series. Colt 3rd Generation. I don't agree with the assessment that the Signature Series are the nicest finished... At least my 1851 isn't!Rimfire McNutjob wrote: ↑Sat Apr 15, 2023 9:19 pmOh, maybe I'm confusing the SAA's with the recent generation BP guns. Those are some incredible firearms you have there. I've heard the phrase: "Gun Porn" before, and if any guns demonstrates that, those do.
I like engraved guns, but those are totally without merit and have no socially redeeming value whatsoever. They can them.

Re: SAA Engraving
I doubt you'd find any proof marks from this being an import now, as it's likely it was polished down prior to doing the elaborate engraving, and only marks they'd save would be the serial numbers most likely. If they wanted to conceal it as an Italian made, then they'd probably be sure to remove any signs of that before applying the engraving and new finish. Not saying it is or isn't, just that it's tough to know now. Seller says it's a Colt, so I'd have to accept his word if I wanted them.

While I admire the female form and I admire fine firearms, the two don't go together. I agree with Six that it's tasteless trash. Where's it from? Who knows...maybe Epstein's collection?

Re: SAA Engraving
I'm certainly no expert, but... that "V" on the trigger guard is like the one all my Colt SAAs, but none of my Italian copies... I know it could have been replicated there... but... just saying! I'm not necessarily put off by the graphic nature of the "art"! (Okay, maybe I am...) But even if I had 12K to throw away, it wouldn't be on this. A BBQ gun for a very different venue! LOL! Maybe to your neighborhood swap meet! You know, where you drop the car keys in a bowl and they get picked out by someone else's spouse! I'm sorry, I'm remembering back on a call in CA... Oh what a mess!!!

Re: SAA Engraving
Simply put…ALL Colt cartridge single actions and double actions are made here, even the parts and screws and the dust that collects in the crevices. The black powder guns are made in Italy. In the beginning the parts were shipped from Italy and assembled in New York somewhere…..the earliest BP Colts were the best finished ……and as time went on they should have just roll stamped “Uberti” on them.
I must have had 30 of em……had serial number “50,000” in a smaller framed gun…can’t remember, maybe a ‘61 or ‘62. Had a consecutive numbered pair of 1851 Navies in the uncatalogued caliber of 44……sold them to RJohns here…….got rid of em all…..the real Colts in the safe were complaining about sharing space with the foreigners.

Re: SAA Engraving
Sixgun, the 2nd Series BP parts were made in Italy and shipped to Colt. Who then assembled and finished under the Dome. The Signature Series were assembled & finished by Iver Johnson (Lou Imperato), otherwise known as Colt Black Powder Arms Co., in NY. At least that what's the registration card in my box sez. The one box I got with one of the 2nd Series registration card has Colt's address on it. You can obtain a Colt letter on the 2nd Series, no so with the Signature Series. Colt also warranted the 2nd Series, again, not so the Signature Series.

Yea…I hear ya Griff…….at first I bought about a dozen of the 1860 Army’s…….they were nice guns with beautiful color case hardening…..took them to a big cowboy match and sold them all…….should’ve kept an example or two but they just didn’t ring my bell….
Most were consecutive numbers too but…….Italian…..no long term investment the way I saw it.——00
