That is a good looking trout stream, are they native? That bunch would make a good batch for the smoker. What are they hitting on?

This is indeed an awesome little stocked Trout stream.JerryB wrote:That is a good looking trout stream, are they native? That bunch would make a good batch for the smoker. What are they hitting on?
I have to drive about an hour or so to start getting into native Trout water streams.
Most of my stocked Trout are caught on Power-bait or small spinners.
Salmon egg's didn't seem to draw their interest this year.
I use ultralight equipment using 2 to no more than 4 # test line.

Fishing is what I did as a kid with my Dad. I can't go without thinking of how much I miss him. Because he knew everything there was to know about fishin'! So I never bothered to actually learn anything except the mechanics. Why? Here was this wonderful resource that loved to talk about it, and share that knowledge... and don't Dad's live forever?
I've gone with a few friends, and enjoyed myself... but, most guys think fishing is a solitary endeavor... and nothing wrong with that... just not the way I was brought up!

Well, I got a nice mess of trout today five nice sized rainbows. A young friend of ours came by this morning and gave them to us. He caught them in the Little Red River a couple of miles be low the dam. I have fished that area with him several times. Reckon we will have them for supper tomorrow.

When I was around 5 or 6 ish mom and dad and I went camping / fishing somewhere in NM. Dad took his poles and gear and we went to a stream / creek / pond, I don't really remember. He got sat up to fish and I got bored really quick, started getting fidgety. Finally dad chased me away.
That was the last of my fishing. Now when I want fish my wife buys it at the store. Sadly it's another one of the things dad couldn't be bothered to teach me.
Oh, is trout a bony fish and if so how do you prepare it to get past the bones?

Joe,
This is how I do it.
Olive oil, low heat 225 deg. for about 20 min.
The backbone and ribcage peel out in almost one intact piece.
Boneless

Re: Been A Fantastic Trout Season This Year...
Boy I do miss trout fishing. Back 35 years ago when I lived in McCall, Idaho I had the Payette River and excellent trout and Kokanee fishing less than 5 minutes away. Limit was 10 fish a day, and using half a nightcrawlers on a #8 baitholder hook and a split-shot on my first ultralight rod & reel I had no problem catch my limit within 30 minutes keeping only those bigger than 12 inches, all hatchery trout of course.
11 years later I spent 8 days on Lake Shasta using a rented houseboat as a base and trolling the whole lake catching rainbows so regularly that we increased our self imposed size limit from the legal 12 inches up to 16 inches and still caught our limit every day without difficulty. Also caught the only Kokanee of the trip a 23 incher, and the biggest fish of the trip a 25 inch Squawfish which fought like a champ.
We do have trout here but only in the high mountain streams and reservoirs of the island of Kaua'i where the colder is cold enough to support trout. The season is one month long in August with most of the reservoir trout being hatchery trout so relatively easy to catch, and the shoreline a zoo with fishermen stand shoulder to shoulder, and requiring extreme patience not wanting for a bite but putting up with other fishermen. Tried it once back in '93, and that was enough.
Now I just have to settle for fishing in my backyard stream for Barracuda (Kaku) and White Trevally (Papio), only thing being I have to upgrade my tackle since they break me off so often when I use ultralight tackle which I love.

The real question should be, what's your favorite fishing sidearm or sidearms. I use fishing as a excuse to buy the occasional pistol to accompany on my outings.
