Diablo movie 2016 - Greatly Underrated

Post by JohndeFresno »

Watching it now on a Netflix disc delivered by mail -
Clint Eastwood's son, Danny Glover, some seasoned Native American actors and Walter Goggins as a typically excellent villain (Compare: "Justified" series). I didn't recognize any horse actors, but they did well, too.

Rotten Tomatoes rates it only 22% for Critics who liked it, 26% viewers who liked it. It was released in January 2016, went directly to home video (February). But there have been other movies direct-to-video which certainly rated higher. I don't get why this one fared so poorly in ratings. I think it's "terrific," to use Mr. Trump's vocabulary.

For my tastes, it has an engaging story, beautiful mountain scenery, varying angles in camera work, some neat period guns (e.g .44 SW American break action revolver and a levergun), realistic Indians who have an understandable agenda and mistrust of White man, passable background music. In other words, it provides good escapist fare, which is why I watch Westerns.

It is rated R but its violence (so far, an hour into its 1:23 length) is pretty minimal. What there is drives the story line - not the common Hollywood variety of gratuitous violence and sex that gets to be obnoxious and even boring.

You might like this one; I think it is a sleeper.

I have never found "movie reviews" to be of any use in predicting whether I will like a given movie.

I just watch 'em. I usually have something to read or do while watching television, but if the movie is interesting, I set it aside. If the movie stinks, then at least I have something to do.

+1. In fact, if they don't like it, I've found I probably will.

You know how almost every other Western features bulletproof 1/4" wooden planks? You know, .44's, .45's, even .44-40's or .30-30's from a rifle can't even penetrate a door? Not in this movie. It's a bit more realistic.

But you will see Papa Eastwood's weird influence - from his early Spaghetti Westerns - as the film progresses. And the ending music is interesting and reminiscent of "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" among others.

Speaking of the ending, which I won't give away - strange, unexpected.

I'll check it out, the only draw back is Danny Glover. Good actor, bad politics. I've got a lot of his movies but that stopped once I saw his true colors.
