Busting a tree rat with a Lyman 311041. Pics
Had a hour to take a quick trip to hunt the river bottom with my son and beagle.
I brought along the 30-30 and some Lyman 173gr bullets loaded with 9.5gr of Unique.
I really did not expect to see anything. Anyone who has tryed to keep up with a big 3 1/2 year old boy and a beagle knows that it leaves little time for anything else.
Same as taking 6 kids fishing.
We piled out of the truck and headed down into the bottoms.
Not 2 min later I scan into the tree tops and see a "lump that looks like it has no buissness being on that limb.
I find a tree to lean against and put the scope on it. All I could make out was a ear and the side of his head. So I put the crosshairs under the ear and touched it off.
The performance of the lengendary Lyman 311041 173gr gas checked bullet lived up to its vaulted reputation.
Passing completly thru the head and smashing into a limb behind it.
No second shot was needed. Range was 30ft across and 70+ feet straight up.
Good times!!
This is where my dog sleeps whenever there is a fire arm in a case next to me on the floor.
The devestation of the Lyman bullet
Last but not least, my son and the rifle.

You can not wack a good 30/30.
Now go and cast me 500 of them slugs
Don't worry about the postage I'll just add it to the cost of the bullet.
Centershot,
My son was real proud walking with that squirrel out of the river bottom.
He made sure to stop and show it to every salmon fishermen on the bank.

Re: Wowie!!
I went with 9.5gr because that is what my Lee 1cc dipper throws. Makes for quick loading.LeverBob wrote:WCF...the only diff. between you & me is that I use 10 grs. of Unique. sometimes the LEE 170. Oh, your boy is a handsome lad, congratulations.

Last time I took a picture of "mom" and posted it on leverguns I was in the dog house for a week. I took it at 0700 while she was still in pajamas and unbrushed hair.
Reflecting back on it, I should of waited.
I am a rich man.
Right now my two nephews are over from across the state for a baby shower.
I volunteered to get them out of the house for the day.
We have already made hot coffee and sausage and potato's outside over the fire and later on we fit my older nephew for his first deer rifle, a 1978 Winchester 94 in 30-30.
I'll be using my small game loads for a few months before working him up to heavier loads

Trust me you can find a better person to cast for you.
Plus I think I would need a permit or something first.
