I found this case at an area popular with locals to shoot. What happened to this 30/30 case. It looks to me it went off out of battery! Is it posable for a lever to fire out of battery?
The case is shown next to a regular 30/30 case for reference
I shure would not not to be the one who pulled the trigger!
Looks like it was fired in a 30-06 chamber or something. Deffinately not fired out of battery in a 30-30. It would have blown if it were out of battery that far.
Could have been fired out of battery, but my guess is someone fired a .30-30 in a rifle chambered for something else. Had the action been that far open it should have ruptured the side of the case too. Maybe they fired it in a .30-06.
It had to have been fired in a gun chambered for a rimmed cartridge as the rim of the 30-30 would not fit under the extractor or boltface of a gun made for a rimless cartridge like the '06, etc. My guess is that the dope fired it in a 30-40 Krag or maybe a 303 British. Either way, we have some real dummies out there. (i do recall I may have been guilty of that) ------------Sixgun
Many summers ago a friend of mine was teaching hunter and gun safety classes in AZ. One of the class segments was to always use the correct ammo for the gun.
To illustrate what would happen if the wrong ammo was used we went out to the desert and made some boo boos. We shot .22 LR in .22 Mag chambers, and 30-30 in 303 British. Both of us were pretty conservative in our guns so these were about the only thing we had to switch out.
That is why I said that case was fired in a 303 Brit chamber. Been there, done that. Besides if you stood a 303 case up besides a 30-30 case it would be obvious.

Phewww! Thank goodness for a logical, thought-out answer! You other guys talking about the '06 were starting to worry me.
