Sights on 30-30's
I am confused again. I recently bought a Winchester M94 (20" bbl.) and a M64 (24" bbl.), both pre-64 and both in 30-30. So far so good.
Quick range trip. Both 30-30's are shooting about 12" high at 100 yds. with the sights at their lowest setting. Just to make sure that it wasn't me, I shot my M92 in 45 Colt and my M71 in 348 and had no problems. Same hold, same range, same day, same targets. Is this just a crazy coincidence, or am I missing something?

I've got a 1907 full octagon 30/30 also that is sighted in at around 400-450 yards with most ammo. With the sight at its lowest setting also.

What kind of sights are on the rifles and what kind of sight picture are you using?

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.
History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

When I mounted Williams FP94/36 rear apertures on my 94s, I did have to install a taller front sight - no problem since I like the XS white stripe front sight better - have a little age related macular degeneration in right eye and the white stripe is easier to see.

Check your rear sight, see if there's a screw on the face of it (should be on the right side). If so, you might be able to loosen it a bit and move the blade insert up a bit by sticking a small blade screwdriver under the insert and pushing down on the rear of the sight. Don't forget to re-tighten the screw. HTH

If I shoot cartridges with lighter/faster bullets on the lowest sight setting, (stock sights,) at 100 yards; the POI will be high at up to 12 inches, (depending on the ammo.) When I use 170gr Winchester Power Points, the POI will match POA.
If you are using heavier bullets and still hitting high, you'll probably need a taller front sight. My Win_94 front sight is 7/16 inch above the barrel.

Re: Sights on 30-30's
I would call it a coincidence and then put new taller front sights on them.
I've never had that happen to my 94s in 30-30, but then I usually just shoot 150 or 170gr ammo at normal factory velocities.

I was printing out a 116 page owners manual for a Singer 401A I just cleaned and oiled.

From what you have said, on your equipment; that could take a while.

Re: Sights on 30-30's
I have a 94 30-30 that I bought new back around 1957. I had a foolproof put on and I am pretty sure the front sight wasnt changed. I have never had to change the setting. It is on at 100 yards. I hadnt shot it in many years as I have many other rifles and last year I shot it off the bench and it still was spot on with about a 1 3/4" group. I also had a pad put on for LOP. About 35 years ago I shot a buck in terrible conditions, a wet snow storm, the buck was high above me in the mountains. It was a fluke. We paced over 220 yards! My longest shot ever! I shouldnt have even tried it!
Re: Sights on 30-30's
I'd like to know what sight picture the OP's using, and what sights (open/peep) are on the rifles, and if they are issue or has aftermarket receiver peep sight(s) been installed by a previous owner w/o installing a higher front sight blade ?

Re: Sights on 30-30's
In 1980 I bought a very lightly used 1979 Win mdl 94 that the original purchaser claimed shot 12" high... I paid $50 less than the shop had allowed him as credit toward another purchase, as the shop owner was convinced the barrrel was bent. And got the rest of the 1st box of ammo that'd been shot thru it! During my inspection while comptemplating the gun, I noticed that the bead had been broken off the front sight!
The top of the front sight should be approx. ¾" above the center-line of the bore. W/either 150 or 170 factory ammo that should the 1st step for 50 yards or the second for 100. That last might change depending on which exact elevator you have.
Pictures help!

Re: Sights on 30-30's
Just remember when you have that screw loosened--move the sliding piece UP if you want the rifle to shoot higher, and DOWN if you want it to shoot lower. If that sliding piece is down as far as it will go, and you are still shooting high, then you need a TALLER front sight. Marbles, for one, has a chart on their website that gives you somewhat of a guide as to how much taller--but don't just rely on a chart. More than likely, if you're already shooting high, and that back sight is down as far as it will go (sliding piece included) and you do replace the front sight with a taller one, you're still going to have to re-zero your rifle by moving the back sight. It's a pretty rare thing to put a new front sight exactly back into the same spot that the old sight was--and that having been said, you'll still probably have to adjust your elevation a bit.1894cfan wrote:Check your rear sight, see if there's a screw on the face of it (should be on the right side).
