Women and shooting, they'll surprise you

Post by J Miller »

Many years ago we were living out in the desert north of Phoenix. Mom and I were sitting out on our front porch shooting cans and bottles with a .22 rifle. I put a bottle on the stump and told her, here you go and handed her the rifle. Bang, nothing happened. I said: "Ha Ha, you missed." She said: "Did not, go look" I looked and dead center of the paper label was the bullet hole. The bottle was toast, only the label holding it together.

Years later we went out shooting and we had an ancient Marlin Mdl 19 shot gun. Must of had a 28" barrel on it. I put up a sillywet target at maybe 7 to 10 yards and handed mom the shot gun. She didn't even bother shouldering it, just put it by her hip and shot it dry. Blew the target to shreds.

After I got married I found out that my wife has one heck of flinch. But nothing I could do would get her to back down the loads for practice. She insisted on full house fire ball magnum loads. So I did what I could. I showed her how she was flinching by putting fired cases in with live rounds, that was a hoot to watch, but I dared not laugh.
Eventually she didn't quit flinching, but somehow she got consistent with it. The last time out with the Mdl 28 she shot 'em all into a 2" group at what ever range we were shooting at. 7 yds I think.

I have learned to not underestimate gals when they shoot, and not be surprised when they shoot quite well. They've all got a little Annie Oakley in them. It just needs to be let out and encouraged.

Till I met my wife, she had never seen touched a firearm, much less fired one. My old .22 single shot Winchester became her favorite right quick. She could hit anything with it. She like the slow pace and little recoil. As she progressed, she was never a speed demon, but she hit what she aimed at. A few years later, thing occured that motivated me to apply for a CCW. She did the same thing a shot time later.

I teasingly started calling he "Ramboina" after she requested a, then fairly new, laser for her 2" .38. Now she can have her pick from scads of handguns, yet she still prefers that old Taurus .38. It now wears laser grips. But heaven help anyone who ends up on the wrong side of that little gun. She has had to draw and point it once, but didn't have to shoot. (pre laser days). And I'm forever thankful she had it.

By the way, watching her with my old 20ga Franchi (well I guess it's her's now), tells me whether at home of out on the town, she'll probably end up taking care of me.

Hi All,

My sister-in-law is from Europe.....never seen a firearm not held by police or army. Came to the states, and had the oppurtunity to do some shooting with my uncle who lives in Texas. She'd done well with a variety of guns, long and short, when my uncle hands her a Blackhawk, 44Mag. Not knowing she was supposed to be affraid of the recoil, she calmly put six round in a two inch bull at ten yards.....off hand.

Yep, you've gotta watch the ladies!

they're so easy to teach. show them a sight picture. show them trigger control. and get out of their way, 'cause they listen, follow directions, and don't experiment with some "better" way to do it, or try some of the stupid stuff we see on t.v. and utube. they consistently do the same thing every time.

Years ago I had 2 S&W 629s .44 mags with 6" barrels. I used to have a 55 gal drum that I would shoot that was just a hair over 100 yards. I was shocked once when I was shooting it with my friends when my mom showed up and suggested that she would like to try. She rang that barrel 6 out of 6 shots, this was the first time I had seen her fire or even pick up a gun in at least 15 yrs.

Ah, the big secrete. Seems guys don't know or don't want to admit but women are inherently better shooters than men. Good shooting is a multi tasking thing. breath control, trigger control, sight acquisition and target acquisition. Men don’t multi task near as well as women.

A prime example is the top snipers. Everyone has heard of Carlos Hathcock and Chuck Mawhinney. Hathcock had something like 93 confirmed and Mulwhinney had 103. But, almost 20 years before with inferior equipment the Russians had a Woman sniper Lyudmila Mikhailivna Pavlichenko that had 309 comfirmed.

The only difference between women and men, as far as shooting is concerned, is physical hand and arm strength. Some women are stronger than some men but on average you can't change the way God made us. That said, the fact that we are even having this conversation says a little something about the average age of the guys here.

I just asked my son what he thought about the subject (tried not be be leading) and he just shrugged and said, "Same I'd think. Unless the gun is so heavy upper body strength matters I don't see how there'd be any difference." He's 15 and didn't think twice before answering.

Then he asked me why anyone would even wonder such a thing?

Thank God for the differences I say! But when it comes to shooting you'd best not stand within 50 yards of my wife if she's armed with a pistol and you got her mad.

I've taught several women to shot, most have been excellent shots right away. One family from church wanted me to get their girls shooting before they went out on their own. They both did very well. One went hiking with me in bear country once, I had no qualms about letting her pack my spare 45 Ruger. She asked, and I just handed it to her.

One friend was peeved when her ex took her 45 and left her with a 380 in the divorce. I sold the 380 and found her a decent 45 auto, took her shooting a few times, and let her go. She hadnt shot much before, but was wicked deadly with the 1911 after a couple times out.

Isnt it amazing how many people post without reading the thread?
