My strange 10 year old grandson.........

Post by hightime »

I've been lucky to have spent a lot of time with him. a bum for a dad. Yesterday he wanted to shoot my 45 colt SA Stampedes. He out shot me. I mean he did good. Every shot within a pie plate at fifty feet. I thought the kick would rattle him. These are hot loads not cowboy loads. A year and a half ago, I let him shoot my deer with his 243 Win. He drilled it though the heart. Spike buck, I had to shoot a doe that season. This year he gets to shoot his own. MN has some sort of special trial permit for ten year olds. I havn't even let him shoot the 243 at targets yet. He didn't feel the recoil at the deer. I don't want him to flinch.
I'm shocked at what has rubbed off on him from hanging arround Papa. I've got four more of these buggers to train in. I don't have time to work.

If no one has told a kid that it's supposed to be difficult... well, it isn't. Good on ya!

The next thing is getting some dies for his 243, and let him use his own loads.

Grandad is a pretty important position in the business of life. I remember some years ago, one of the older grandsons was 9 or 10 and I'd set him down at the loading bench doing some menial thing like depriming a bunch of brass getting it ready for a wash. I wandered off, got attention diverted and forgot him for well over an hour. Thought "oh poop! wonder what's going on with the little devil?"

When I looked in he was still hard at it. I asked if he was OK and his response was "gpa, I was born to reload!"

And his dad seldom even goes shooting. Funny (and maybe vital for the species) what they pick up from the grandad.

Earl that is funny!

Someone told me once that little boys like things that fly through the air. Bullets, arrows, or rocks from a slingshot.

You go Papa !!! After spending nineteen years teaching high school, I certainly appreciated parents/grand-parents who would spend time teaching their youngsters what the world was about.

As any of us old grampas can tell you, all grandkids need is some love and attention. All of mine are are shooters and some are reloaders too. Keep up the good work.
