Uberti '73 mag tube plug

Post by kimwcook »

I've tried to take the magazine tube end plug off my Uberti '73 using as wide and thin bit as I have and the plug doesn't want to turn. I don't want to bugger it up so I'm looking for suggestions or direction for a bit that'll fit so I don't tear up the slot. Your ideas, thoughts, experiences. Thanks.

Hey there Kim -- Do a little creative grinding on the end of an old hacksaw blade. Worked for me. Good luck. Best regards. Wind

Lefty Dude, thank you very much. I'll be ordering one right away.

Wind, thank you as well, but I think I'll be going for the wrench. :D

Here's the link to the mag tube wrench. http://www.uniquetek.com/site/696296/product/T1380

I ground down a .625" hollow ground blade from a driver kit and my ¼" drive adapter... viola, new easy to use mag plug screwdriver.

And the guy at the Uberti factory that puts the final torque on all their screws in the leverguns is "GUIDO"... he part-times in Mr. Universe competitions. I heard someone that claimed to have taken a factory tour say they heard him say, "... tork-a-wrenncch... who needa a tork-a-wrenncch?"  :P

This subject comes up quite often. One thing that never gets mentioned is supporting the tube. If it takes a lot of torque to remove the plug you best support the tube in a padded vise or you stand the chance of damaging it. If it turns that can dent the tube enough that the follower won't pass.

Also, I saved this.
Learn how to hollow grind the tips to fit. I don't try to buy specific tips. I use oversize tips and hollow grind them to fit. (Dremel and sanding drum) That is the only way to insure the fit.
Next, you need this; 7 Piece Reversible Impact Driver Set

Yep, a much heavier version of that torque driver was standard equipment for all of us who worked on Honda motorcycles back in the 70's. Different rates of thermal expansion caused the steel screws to lock in the aluminum cases. Only way to get them out was a torque driver and small sledge hammer. Funny that even with all that torque, driving the bit into the screw head usually meant it wasn't damaged at all.
