Gun show report, now with a photo

Post by J Miller »

Today was the first time in years my wife had a day off at the same time there was a gun show. So we went. It was the one at the Fairgrounds. Supposedly Illinois' Largest gun show. I was, to say the least, underwhelmed. Illinois' largest was less than a 10th of what a Crossroads of the West Gun show in Arizona would have been. But what the heck, we didn't make one at all last year.

First thing out of the box, just a couple tables down from the door was a guy with some Winchester 94s. One of them an 1896 vintage round barreled, full magazine rifle like the one rjohns is selling me. My wife about passed out at the price. And it wasn't even in as good condition as rjohns is. Rjohns, do not fret I will be in contact with you soon. :D

We covered the entire show in about 2.5 hours and that included going back to several vendors for second thought purchases.

Much mil-surp stuff, many many AR type guns. Lots of bolt guns both old and new. More M1 Garands than I've ever seen in one place, all of them with prices that made me cringe.
Some Ruger single actions, all New Models, well, I did see one very used Old Model Single-Six.
Glocks out the yazoo. There were at least two Glock dealers there.

Not much mil surp ammo though. Almost no 303 Brit stuff at all and no 303 Mil surp. Quite a bit of com block stuff though.
One thing that caught my attention was the amount of 50 BMG brass, loaded ammo and bullets. Lots of it. Never seen that much of that before.

One dealer had a commercially built 303 Brit sporter. It was built on a No 4 receiver. I forget the manufacturers name. Really nice wood, nice bluing too. I drooled near it. They were asking $325.00.

In the end I came home with:
>An olive drab wooden box that measures 12" square x 6" deep. Steel hinges and latch. Some kind of ammo box, but the size was what got my attention.
>A universal clamp on table vise. Been looking for one to work on gun projects with.
>A flat jawed set of pliers to use when I tweak the feed lips on Ruger 22 magazines.
>6 REM-UMC black powder factory .45 S&W rounds
>2 fired Frankford Arsenal Cal .45 M1909 cases (Sorry Sixgun, I'll buy empty balloon head cases any time of the year.)
>1 maybe fired Frankford Arsenal Cal .45 M1909 cartridge with the bullet pushed back into the case.
~AND~
>A DVD copy of THE WAR WAGON staring John Wayne and Kirk Douglas. Been looking for that one for a loooooooong time.

My wife bought:
>A double sided knife sharpener for the kitchen.
>A pair of ear rings with lady bugs
>A pair of ear rings with sterling silver single action revolvers on them.
SAA ear rings002.jpg
Didn't buy any shooting ammo, or components. Looked at them, but didn't buy. No guns of course. Other than the commercial 303 nothing really grabbed my attention.

All in all a decent day at the show.

Joe

There was only one vender that had any quantity of components.
Winchester primers: $29.00 per K for small size and $32.00 per K for the large size.
Alliant powders were $20.00 per pound. The Winchester powders were pretty close to that as well.
I didn't check many of the bullet prices and the only one I can remember was a package of 500 147gr BT FMC 30 cal bullets for the 7.62x51. He wanted $100.00 for 500 bullets.

Another vendor had the military surplus powders, the only one I looked at was the South African equivalent to Unique. He wanted $60.00 for 4 pounds.

Sounds like hanging out in heaven, but you don't have to die to be there! :D I believe prices are still a bit inflated, but for some strange reason, Winchesters & Colts hold their own, even in bad times.

Your post reminded me, I need a "fix".I have not been to a show in 2 weeks.------------Sixgun

We were joking about that. Wondering what would happen if she wore them to work. I doubt they'd even notice. But, I'll bet you're right about the airport.
The TSA mugger would take them from her and give them to his SO.

Bought & paid a hefty price for a set of earrings for Her, made out of old manual typewriter keys ("7 &" and "mar rel").

Nobody in office old enough to know what they were.

Balloon head cases:
Image If you care to note, the primer pocket protrudes into the powder cavity, whereas in modern ammo, that open space around the primer pocket is filled... While ok for BP ammo and pressures, one needs to exercise caution about using these old cases. The old primers were very corrosive and if not cleaned properly after firing, weakens the brass.

I can't recall Mrs. YK ever going to a gun show with me. Then again, I don't think I'd want the witness!

While I look at the guns, ammo, reloading stuff, my wife checks out the knives, jewelery (if any) and other things. This last show there was a lady with two humongous computerized embroidery machines and my wife stood there for the longest time watching them.
Sometimes we'll look at the same things.
