Gun show 1894
Went to a small local gun show this morning, and it was pretty bleak for old leverguns. I was waiting at the front entry with jdad, when in walks a guy with a 1894 Marlin to sell! I spotted the pistol grip right away, and then the takedown mechanism. Turned out to be my favorite caliber (.32-20!) and all original sights, etc. Bore looked good also, so I snapped it up for a very nice price before the vultures inside could grab it!
Not a lot of finish left with about 50% barrel blue, silvered out receiver, great bore, but it's still a neat configuration. This is the first pistol gripped early Marlin I've owned that wasn't checkered.-Vall

Cooooolllll, Its snags like that, that make the gunshows worthwhile, even if it only happens 1 time out of 30.
Can I have it?
(same odds---if you ask everyone you see with a nice gun "can I have it?", about 1 in 30 will be in a good mood and say "sure") --------Sixgun

Vall, you've done it again! Congratulations on a good deal for both parties. What a slick little rifle.

Timing is everything! If my friend had not doddled around and left me waiting at the door, we would have been gone when it came through the door!

I saw the guy come in the door. I caught his attention, looked at it and as soon as I saw it wasn't a rimfire old "eagle eyes" took over.marlinman93 wrote:Timing is everything! I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.
Re: Gun show 1894
mm93, Jdad,
If I went to a gun show with you 2 I'd come in a DISTANT 3RD when it comes to spotting good finds! I don't think either one of you make many mistakes when it comes to judgement on firearms!
Sure looks like a great little find! How do you guys check the bore at a gunshow? A piece of paper in the breech end or finger nail to reflect the light or what??
By the way, what is the year of manufacture on this one???
Glad you guys had a great day!
Geoff

Re: Gun show 1894
Usually I tear a piece of white paper off something in my pocket, but this time jdad had his pocket light. I wear an old canvas vest to most shows that has all my gun buying stuff in it usually. Bore light, tape measure, pocket calipers, magnifying glass, spectacles, and notebook. Sort of keeps me prepared to examine interesting guns for whatever reason.
I always try to take notes on guns I see, even if I don't buy them. I've been able to build and keep data on hundreds of Marlins over the years, just for my own reference. I write the notes out on full sized sheets and they are stuffed into my copy of Brophy as additional reference.-Vall
