OT: getting rid of shine

Post by Junior »

A flock of ducks saw me yesterday I am convinced because of the shiny receiver of my Handi-Rifle. The shotgun barrel is matte finished. Is there a cheap way to get rid of the shine on the receiver? Some of that bake-on stuff from Brownells?

scotch brite.

I am not for sure what is cheap, but I think it would look good to put a matte finish on the reciver too.

...I thought you used camo tape on all your hunting guns. Are you just looking for a permanent fix?

I want permanent. The camo duct tape works just fine, but after a while it starts fraying and each place that frays turns white. So you wind up with white strings hanging down from white spots.

I'd even consider sending the receiver off if there's no permanent home fix.

Flat black high-temp spray paint from your local auto parts house, normally used for exhaust manifolds and header pipes, etc. Quick and easy.

And prepare the surface how? I spray painted a rifle OD green, and I can scrape off the paint with my fingernail. I want permanent.

you could leave it out in the rain for a couple days. That'll take care of the shiny

Junior, you could probably use flat black BBQ grill paint. I have done a couple of old grills and they set out in the weather and still look good.

How about a fine brown? You can degrease the action, then use bleach or any commercial browning agent to get whatever shade or level of 'darkness' you want.

What does your reciever look like now? Case colored, or something else?

Junior,

H&R used to varnish their CCH receivers. Is that how yours is? I've seen Scotchbrite pad used to break the shine. HOWEVER, it might have been that darn forearm "iron" of plastic or the trigger guard. I don't think I've ever had the problem though with my PCS gun, maybe because my glasses produce so much shine I don't notice anything else affecting the game.

Sand. Either blast media or paper, but sand will etch the surface for primer.

Clean with paint thinner to de-grease/grime it, and then apply a good primer to it.

Let it dry, scuff with scotch-brite, and apply more if needed.

Scotch-brite.

Clean with soapy water and dry thuroghly.

Apply some Dura-coat or similar finish, in matte of course.

Let dry, enjoy. :D

Get some Brownells Alumihyde. Works awesome and is spray on just like paint, but leaves a park style finsih. Cures in 24 hours and is around $13

Hobie, my receiver shines like a black mirror. Like a Weatherby blue. Your receiver isn't as shiny as the buttstock.

I'm headed back duck hunting in the am, so I'll hide it with duct tape until I come up with a permanent solution.

Aw, hell...

Just get one of those strechy camo socks to pull over the gun.

Cut a couple of strategically placed holes, and viola! Yer gone huntin'.

Junior,
Brownells has a product called "Gun-kote" that looks like it might work for you. You'd have to fully strip the receiver because you heat t he part in the oven to bake it on and I'm afraid the heat would get to the springs.

http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ ... N%20FINISH

There is a video on the Brownells website that shows how to apply it as well.
