I believe that "El Paso", Marty's first of many hits and western ballads spurred my interest in old guns. Iit was shortly after his next hit, "Big Iron", hit the AM airwaves that I bought my first $12.00 Colt SA. The .45 Ammo cost half as much as the gun did, in the very early '60s. Of course, that old clunker is LONG gone, but the momory stands clear. I keep a CD og "Gunfighter Ballads" in my truck and listen it often. there a few that I don't care for, such as "Five Brothers", but most are worth listening to over and over, especially "Shorty". You can well imagine the scenerios in all of his songs and they would do great with a "realistic" video. No chimpanzees, or "motorized monsters" for me.

Yep, Mr. Shorty is one of my favorites. When I was growing up, my dad played Marty Robbins all the time. I think he still has that "Gunfighter Ballads" record with Marty in his shootin gettup with the pink cover. Big Iron is a great song. It's like watching a western movie with my eyes closed. Too bad he passed before his time.

A few years back i worked with some folks that put on blank-fire re-enactments for the SW Louisiana Fat-stock show & Rodeo. One year we did a show to "Big Iron" and I was the bad guy Texas Red. This is me just before the ranger shot me with his "Big Iron"

One of my favorite lyrical trilogies is El Paso, Felina & Return to El Paso. The last sorta explains a bit about Marty.

Mentioning of the show done to Big Iron reminds me. Marty also sang a song called San Angelo. They did a movie based on the song, starring Marty as the doomed lover.

Actually, in San Angelo, both die. The song tells of the hero's last act of reaching out and touching the hand of his dead lover. In the movie, they're several inches apart. The inference being that they met on the other side. The song Felina is actually about the life of the girl who whirled in El Paso. She takes her life with her dead lovers pistol as an act of defiance.

Love those old Gunfighter ballads...

Built many a model airplane or tank while my dear 'old Dad played that record over and over. Then I got into Styx, Kansas and ELP etc and Big Iron was quiet for a few decades...

Fast forward to 2007 and I found the Marty Robbins CD -- at the Buckhorn Saloon gift shop in San Antonio of all places, just after touring their Texas Ranger Museum -- and there was no question, I had to buy that CD for Dad.

He's gone now, almost a full year but my mother gave me the CD and I will play it often when reloading -- or cleaning my BIG IRON.

Deerwacker, man HOW I remember that pink record cover and Marty dressed up as a gunfighter!! I remember in the late 60's and early 70's listening to BIG IRON and loving it!
