Back Yard Gun Muffler
Dudes & Fellow Shootists,
I post these pics from time to time to educate newcomers on how they can shoot in their backyard without disturbing the neighbors. I am sure it can be scaled up or down according to your preferences.
It is made of a series of baffles made from 3/8 plywood all stuffed into a plastic 55 gallon drum. The holes in which you shoot through are made progressively smaller towards the end. Helps keep the sound in the drum. Standard insulation is stuffed in between the baffles. 1/4" rat wire keeps the insulation from falling in the area where you shoot.
The blue "add-on" drum is not needed. I just use that to keep longer barreled rifles from getting too close to the end and as a resting place, especially for handguns.
A word of caution--Its no good for blackpowder guns as the blast comes right back at your face! Maybe some smarter guys here can figure out a way to get past that. Also, velocities should be kept below the speed of sound. (1100 fps) It will still work with high velocity rounds but as the bullet passes anything, a loud crack from breaking the sound barrier is heard. Seems to me to be just as loud.
Target velocity rounds, along with 1000 fps 45-70's sound like, well, not much. Maybe a little "thump". The wife can't hear it in kitchen, 30 feet away.-----------------Sixgun

Is the rear mount on that scope adjustable for various distances, or do you set it and forget it?
Handirifle,
The scope is a hundred year old Stevens and has external adjustments built into the mounts. After all these years, the whole sha-bang works great.
Junior, I am nice, but not very patient---I sized 'em big so people can see the details.

Nice setup.
Whose back yard is that where you have the target?
Also, what type deer is that with the brown body and black mane?

The dogs are 3 of 14 Yorkies . These three (of four) are my "road dogs", Suzy, Eddie and Skittles, along with Spike (not in pic). The guys on Sixgunner.com used to call them "land pirahnas." They jump in the Jeep and raise all kind of heck. Last week they ate the console in my old '89 Wrangler when I left 'em in there while I was gunshop hopping. Thats OK, they are my buddies.
crs--Those big "deer"are worthless. (my wifes) Thats all they do is eat and ----, cost vet bills, shoe bills, etc. At least the dogs work for their keep. The yard is ours. I married a farmers daughter (even when I was a young man, I knew I would need a place to shoot!!

Rusty, They work super with .22's, but like I said in the post, the velocity has to be under 1150 fps. Handguns usually don't get that fast even with HV stuff and I use target velocity ammo in rifles. I mean QUIET. If you look in the second pic, you will see a white spot in the background (to the left of the horse) That is a 8" gong at 140 yards with a a silhouette chicken above it and to the left. When I am shooting at that gong with .22's, the only sound you hear is the bullet smacking the gong. Its the same when using 400 grain bullets with 11 gr. of Unique in the 45-70. A BIG noise from the gong but no gunshot. I do have some uppity neighbors that I like to keep guessingRusty wrote:That's just plain cool!!
Thanks for sharing. Do they work OK with .22's?

You might check out this site for some ideas on suppressing noise.

Grizz, the 11 grains of Unique with a 350-450 gr. bullet will run just about 1050 +/- 50 fps, according to bullet weight. It is below the speed of sound which makes it ideal for the muffler. Very safe load for all 45-70's. I have many thousands of these loads through various guns, old and new. Pressures run in the low teens.Grizz wrote:Nice job Sixgun
Do you have a velocity and pressure number for the 400g+Unique load?
Seems like a candidate for the 425g cast I shoot.
Thanks,
Grizz
But like I said earlier, you have to be careful you don't double charge. Just drop the 11 grains in loose in the case and slap the bullet on top!------------------------Sixgun
Thanks Sixgun, I'll give it a whirl.Sixgun wrote:Grizz, the 11 grains of Unique with a 350-450 gr. bullet will run just about 1050 +/- 50 fps, according to bullet weight.
