I always thought that the 6mm Lee-navy straight pull made by Winchester in the mid-1890's was way ahead of its time. IIRC, a problem was that then-available powder excessively fouled the bore. Seems that the USMC was otherwise favorably impressed w/ the rifle & calibre.

Jeremy: since you are planning on shooting a rifle that is 100+ years old, I suggest that you find a solid rest for it, attach a long lanyard, & then fire it. I make this suggestion as the Rolling Block has no really safe way of venting gas from a pierced primer. & none of us know this rifle...

The local WalMart sells 9" dia. orange or black paper plates -- 20 for a buck. I just stocked up on 240 for "targets", came to just about US $14.00, inc. tax. In the spring & summer they also have red paper plates.
