Re: .44 Special, more than I thought.

A .50 cal round ball only weights about 177 grains and average velocity for deer loads are about 1500 fps. I have put one through a deer on both sides before at about 75 yards. I am sure that Skeeter Load in the Marlin would handle a deer at least to 75 yards maybe 100 if it didn't have a lot of dro...

I have always felt that Hodgdon Load Data is as accurate as it comes. That being said, I am curious why you are wanting to stay subsonic with your choice of load? Ballistic Products has a product called a STUMP WAD. I plan to try those and some Full Length Wads as well. Thinking to start with 15 grains of W296 for the power with 3-4 .36 cal. balls to start. I also have some .38 SPL 145 grain LSWCHP that have a BHR of 10-12 that I may put in a wad as a SABOT.

My first association with cap and ball pistols was while doing reenactments as a cavalry soldier. Good Job Pitchy. I was checking out different designs on AMAZON and found one with the same style jute for tinder. However it had an added twist, or so I think. It had be impregnated with WAX. Not only good to help start a fire and feed it, it would also keep it a bit more waterproof.

You cant beat those old carbon steel blades (1095). They sharpen up pretty quick on a butcher steel. You probably still have at least one old circular saw blade laying around. They make excellent blades that will sharpen right up.
