That's a fine piece of iron right there, thank you for sharing. It appears that there is a hole in the loading gate due to machining? Any chance I could get a picture of what that looks like? Be interesting to see the guns from the outside looking in.

Howdy, and welcome. I am no expert, but I have a new 1886 and a new 1892, and I've been researching the guns and the takedown system as a result. This picture is from my new 1892, but they used this system on 1886s, 1892s, and 1894s. I'd say a gunsmith removed the takedown lever and knurled the end....

Wow! You should test a known load and gun and see if it's correct there. I've heard of there being a 200-300 fps difference between similar barrel lengths out of different guns, but that's pretty excessive.

Accuracy will be dependent if your particular gun likes it. But most likely it'll be as accurate as any other factory ammo. I haven't any idea on the bullets performance, and am interested myself. My first thought was 348 Winchester. Brass is beginning to be available again, so it should be a spell before it dries up. You could consider 33 Winchester too... While it wasn't as strong as the 348 Winchester that replaced it, in a modern gun, it could be handloaded into the same power range. Bras...

I've used the side cutters and the press technique a lot. I do have a hammer that I use some. I've found that it works better if I use the shell holder instead of the collet that comes with it.
